The twinning was established in 1990 and is based on good food and mutual hospitality. The links are strengthened each year through student and worker exchange, sporting events and tourism as well as official visits.

They were drawn together by the similarity of their locations, sailing and other attractions, with food to the fore once again. Previous Irish American links and the interest of many Newport residents in the land of their forefathers have helped develop contacts at an unprecedented rate to the mutual benefit of both communities.
